Welcome to the first online annual report produced by The University of Montana Foundation. The report contains fundraising results, our financial summary for the year, and compelling stories in text and video format that celebrate the impact of private support at The University of Montana. In designing our multi-media report this year, we wanted to present the information in a new and exciting way that will improve readability and will help our friends and supporters share our pride in The University of Montana. As always, we welcome your feedback.

On June 30, 2009, we closed out one of the most exciting and challenging years in the history of The University of Montana Foundation. Along with the entire global community, we rode a roller coaster of economic uncertainty. Yet we remained focused on one thing: the success of our students—those who are enrolled at The University of Montana now, and those who dream of attending UM in their future.

Almost 16,000 donors stood side by side with the UM Foundation’s Trustees and UM’s campus leaders, faculty, and staff to make this our second-best fundraising year ever. For your commitment and generosity, we are grateful. Together, we ensured that every student that was promised a privately funded scholarship got one. Countless students, faculty, and staff benefited from the flexible funds that are raised each year through the Excellence Fund. Nearly $30 million was transferred from the UM Foundation to the campus for purposes as varied as the campus itself. Programs were enhanced, faculty stars were recruited, innovative research is on a dramatic upward trajectory, and our beautiful campus continues to thrive.

Even in tough times, the affection and loyalty of our alumni and friends sustain the vision of a great University and all that it requires. We appreciate the special privilege it is to be part of this University, and understand well that higher education transforms people’s lives and represents the true hope of our future.
